Review #1 - USB Cable Magnus - Ricable Review
Months ago I was looking for a USB digital cable for my Rega DAC-R, and having already purchased several Ricable products to my satisfaction, particularly the RCA cable Magnus and the Custom H6P power cords (the latter of which gave the system a truly unexpected boost of energy), I thought to myself how come they didn't have a USB cable in the catalog, waited patiently for its arrival, and it finally arrived.
and aesthetics of the product?
Just the care of the packaging (even to the touch) gives an idea of what awaits inside, I also like the meadow green coloring with an excellently done screen printing highlighted, inside also the certificate of LIFETIME warranty.
The cable presents itself in all its beauty, yes, because it is indeed beautiful and well made with its new heat-shrink sleeves to protect the connectors, comfortable even in the grips; the cable is sturdy but flexible enough, nice the cable clamps with the Italian flag, to proudly recall the product's Made in Italy.
Premise: my system was born for exclusive analog listening, so turntables and vinyl full blast, only recently I decided to share this passion of mine with digital, hence the arrival of the Rega DAC-R. As you note, practically the system is single-ended, just to have the security of balance between the various electronics. The DAC, as a sound, comes close to the analog taste of the turntable. The Russell K Red 50 monitor speakers are extremely unyielding in bringing out good and bad recordings--but very very musical--they are for me the jewel of the system. For listening I proceed either by streaming or through files on hard disk, all in FLAC 24 bit 192 kHz format, and as a comparison a battle USB cable and a fiber optic cable, then digital output of the Mac...then I love to do the live comparison between vinyl and digital file...taking care to choose vinyls from analog master, running the track on the two formats at the same time...this is because my reference is vinyl listening.
listening impressions?
The rehearsal is spread over three days--each day a different genre of music repeated several times on the chosen pieces, also to break in the new cable as much as possible.
The first listening starts with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony as a work complete with instrumental passages, single voices, and in the finale beautiful choruses, so wide possibility of judgment in one piece...I like to hear the air, the breath of the music, what digital often takes away, after all music is vibration of the air, the Ricable cable for now is the one that comes closest to this purpose, I pick up a softening of the sound compared to the routine cable I usually use. Please note: by softening I do not mean a coloring of the sound, but a more naturalness than the, you name it, "digital coldness." I still remain of the opinion that a good analog recording and a proper system to back it up is preferable--more music. The Ricable cable does its job of transferring data...I think it is much more difficult to judge a cable pre-purposed for digital than one pre-purposed for analog precisely because of their technical characteristics...the cable's priority is not to add or detract from the flow of the music, the sound, the dynamics, the timbre of the voice are priorities of the recording and the goodness of the system. The USB Magnus does its job, nothing takes away, nothing adds, and that is no small thing.
Second day of listening, we continue with a very good digital recording of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, At Carnegie Hall, a live recording, I also own the fully analog version here and the listening is at the same time changing the switch live from turntable to DAC, and here I must honestly admit that the digital beats my beloved analog sound big time... again the Magnus cable remains impartial, it gives and gives nothing away, it makes the sound flow in a truly credible and natural way.
Third day of listening, here comes AC/DC, Power Up, the band's latest effort...nice bass, just deep enough, without overpowering Brian Johnson's raspy vocals, here the Magnus Ricable brings out the mellow feeling I had in the first few listens, this record I used to struggle to listen to for much, now it's all more enjoyable, maybe... I say this without objective evidence, the famous digital jitter that plagues the sonic result is more protected by the cable Ricable, resulting in less distortion, not audible but weighing down the listening fatigue, but I am not a technician, just a longtime listener and take this opinion of mine as ... a personal feeling.
Your conclusions.
I took an extra day, this time I listened again to all three genres of music back to back, and drew the final conclusion. I can put my fixation on analog sound on par with digital sound, for sure USB Magnus helped me in this choice, now I'm letting my turntable cartridge rest a bit more, I'm slowly changing all my cables focusing everything on Ricable, I must confess that I started out skeptical about the cable thing, given also their cost, I started this adventure with some Nordost not exactly cheap, but I was a bit disappointed, then I wanted to try the Ricable and here for me was the turning point, they are well made, beautiful, cost much less than many emblazoned competitors, and above all they make the system sound the way I wanted it to sound... What can I say, thank you for this reality and for your passion-which is then also mine.
